JPEC Presents: Take Five

A Tribute to Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond

and the music of one of JPEC's student groups from 6:30 to 7:30.

On November 24, some of Canada's best musicians will deliver their interpretation of the famous Brubeck/Desmond duo's repertoire. The Five are Remi Bolduc (alto saxophone), Bernie Senensky (piano), Reg Schwager (guitar), Steve Wallace (bass), Terry Clarke (drums).

"I am very pleased that JPEC has chosen to honour Dave and Paul as part of their 10th anniversary concert season," said Matt Brubeck. "Dave always enjoyed performing for his Canadian fans, at first in clubs and then for many years on the jazz festival circuit, while Paul put together a "Canadian Quartet" in 1974 with Don Thompson, Ed Bickert, and Jerry Fuller. So, it is clear that Dave and Paul's connection to Canada, its musicians, and discerning audiences, runs deep. I look forward to this exciting JPEC event." Take Five Story The Story of Take 5

'Take Five' remains the biggest selling jazz single of all time, and its familiar melody has introduced many listeners to jazz (NPR100 Special Series, Nov. 2000)
In the late 1950's, Dave Brubeck said, "...it's a good idea to shake things (jazz music) up a bit," and that's exactly what he did with the song.

The Brubeck-Desmond Partnership

Brubeck and Desmond were able to create simultaneously ...they seemed to read each other's minds while interlocking and at the same time, keeping out of each other's way. (Source, Jazz Journal, August, 2018)

Paul Desmond's Canadian Quartet and "Audrey", Live in Toronto 1975
Audrey Hepburn
Desmond was proud of his Canadian Quartet and often played in Toronto's Bourbon Street with Ed Bickert, Don Thompson and the late Jerry Fuller.

Audrey was recorded at Bourbon Street in 1975 by Don Thompson on a no longer available CD entitled, "Audrey, Live in Toronto".

Paul Desmond was obsessed with Audrey Hepburn. At one time, the quartet was playing a season at the Basin Street East in New York, and it just happened that Audrey was starring in a play at a nearby theatre.

Rémi Bolduc CD Release in 2015: Homage a Tribute to Dave Brubeck

The Rémi Bolduc Jazz Ensemble with special guest pianist François Bourassa launched a Tribute to Dave Brubeck three years ago, performing the music of Brubeck's celebrated band, which also recognized the excellent saxophonist Paul Desmond. "Take Five," "Blue Rondo a la Turk" and several other compositions from the album Time Out were included.

From Montreal, Rémi Bolduc joins solid Toronto musicians Bernie Senensky, Reg Schwager, Steve Wallace, and Terry Clarke for JPEC's 10th Anniversary concert.

Hersch also won the Book of the Year for his memoir, Good Things Happen Slowly: A Life In and Out of Jazz (Crown Archetype). JPEC was thrilled to present Hersch in a solo piano performance in 2015.

85 Year Old Wayne Shorter launches triple album

After 60 years of jazz, Wayne Shorter's new triple-album, Emanon (Blue Note Records), demonstrates that the 85-year-old legend is still cooking. Accompanying his string-driven orchestrations with a graphic novel, it draws upon the saxophonist's life-long love of comic books.

Tony Bennett Joins Guinness Book of Records

Tony Bennett and Diana Krall were launching their band new album, Love is Here to Stay at the Rainbow Room in New York (Verve Records) when a representative of the Guinness Book of Records joined them on stage to confirm Tony Bennett as the holder of the title for the longest time between the release of an original recording and a re-recording of the same sing by the same artist - Fascinating Rhythm. Bennett has started his career in 1949 with the Gershwin favourite under the name Joe Bari.
